In this video on YouTube, Dez, the animated cane toad, speculates about what might have happened to his friend Baz.
Scenarios include becoming road kill and an unfortunate run-in with a lawn mower.
While it's animated, this video is not for kids...
It's been a looooooonnnnnggggggg time since I posted last here. Maybe I'll be able to get back into this.
Given the nature of this blog (shoes & toads), I can't believe I never posted this joke before...
Q)What kind of shoes do frogs wear??
A)Open-Toad Sandles
Q)What happens when frogs park illegally?

Identifying frogs & toads correctly takes askill and years of slogging around in swamps. To help people identify and learn more about the frogs and toads calling from the woods, around ponds and wetlands and in their backyards, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has a new educational product, The Frogs and Toads of North Carolina Field Guide and Recorded Calls.
The 88-page field guide, with CD, which sells for $15, features audio calls & 120 full-color photographs that illustrate the 30 frog and toad species native to North Carolina. Detailed descriptions of each species simplify identification and range maps identify where they are found in the state.
Michael Dorcas, associate professor of biology at Davidson College and a herpetologist, co-wrote the book with Jeff Beane, collections manager with the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, Steven Price, a research coordinator with Davidson College Herpetology Lab, and Sarah Cross Owen, a former herpetologist with the Wildlife Resources Commission.

Article in This is Wiltshire in the U.K. may help us save a few, innocent toads on their way home from work...
Excerpted from the article:
Julie Swabey, a district and county councillor who lives in Edington, is trying to form a toad conservation group and get road signs put up in the village.
Between February and early May large numbers of toads have to cross village roads as they make their way to a pond by the Priory Church.
Cllr Swabey said: "I'm a wildlife fanatic and something needs to be done to stop these toads being run over.
[we need people] who will volunteer to come out when it starts to drizzle or rain and pick the toads up and move them to the other side of the road so they can make their way to the pond.
"It would be really good if we could get some children involved because they are a very important part of the village, and also people from other areas would be welcome to come along if they wanted to help out."
"Unfortunately when a car comes along toads just freeze and that's how so many of them get killed," she said.
"Toads tend to come out after dusk which unfortunately coincides with the rush hour."
Just read this post by A.K. Siva on his/her blog called The Lighter Side of Life that sadly points out that there are toads that are dying from sex in the Dutch village of Montfort.
The source of the post is found at http://www.stunning-stuff.com/read-weird-news-stories/121.html?ci=s&st=2&pa=1&kw=toads (note, the story also uses the image I posted for Crazy Toad Sex).
The story notes that while this can happen from time to time, there is an exceptional rate of death-by-sex at this particular pond. There must be something special in that water! Just might go get me some.
Of course, I'm never happy when a toad brother or sister dies, even when they go out like this...
Just found this very cool picture/graphic of a "Toad Queen" on Worth 1000...
The artist is "ozplasmic", check out some other graphics by ozplasmic
Are any of these suitable mates?
Just found a string of posts on Yahoo Answers for the following toad-related question:
One funny typo in an answer there...
"they feed on any incest they find so dont worry"
I'll dig up some more in-depth toad feeding info later (Just started a toad links typelist on the blog today - check out left, bottom margin)
The Register, an oline publication from the UK first reported this story about exploding toads in a pond in Hamburg, Germany in April 2005.
There was a recent update that "crows have been fingered as the culprits. Apparently the crow pecks a small hole in the toad to get at the liver. The toad begins to inflate itself - its normal defence mechanism - but because there is no separation between lung cavity and abdomen, the poor blighter keeps on expanding until it goes pop."
There is a nice thread in the science section of Netscape.com where people are discussing the poor toads...
Obviously, we here at SquareToad are sad about our poor brothers in the pond.
Who knows how long this page will stay up - it's one of those random pages hanging off of a site that may or may not continue to support the random content that is sitting there into the future. But, by the looks of the pages here there are some old school "hackers" taking care of the stuff, so it should continue to live somewhere.
Anyway, the real point here is that someone actually wrote an Ode to the Scrotum of a Toad!
Couldn't ask for a better addition to the Ode to a Toad and Toad bits categories of our site...
Here is another Ode to a Toad that was submited on the SquareToad website back in October 2005 by Andrea Da Costa (Pieces of My Heart):
Darling Toad...
Oh darling toad of the slimy skin
Could there be more to you within?
I'd like to believe you are a prince
But that fairytale died for me long since!
Oh darling toad all covered in warts
Could you be a prince of sorts?
I can't imagine you on a shining steed
But to believe in you I feel a need!
If I should deign to give you a kiss
Would I get warts upon my lips?
Could a slime like you make my heart sing?
If I'm to find out I must do this thing!
*Mwah* There! The deed is done!
Damn! I knew you wouldn't be one!!!
Nice little youtube video with a very angry toad... don't watch with the kids.
I think I found that toxic toad reference I was looking for. Unfortunately, it's not a superhero at all. Some lame-ass, HR-type person doesn't want us to be "toxic toads" by:
"
"
Just found this book as I was searching for "toxic toad" in Google. Thought I had seen a Toxic Toad comic book at some point awhile back (I'm still going to look for it). But, this was the #1 result:
Looks yummy doesn't it? Looks like a fun book for kids. But seems to only be published and sold in the U.K. (couldn't find it on traditional Amazon, just Amazon.co.uk).
The author, Ian Hills, wrote his own notation on http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toxic-Toadburger-Conspiracy-Ian-Hills/dp/1840465646:
"Amazing what happens when you combine an over-active imagination, 15 months unemployment, a small stint of depression and a curious affection for toads."
Think I can relate...
Fun little toad-based comic strip. "Two New Office Humor Comic Strips Every 'Moanday'"
Art is by Taylor Dobson. Design and content by Bob Cole
There is a coincidental disclaimer at the bottom of the homepage:
Any similarity between the comic strip Stars 'n Toads and your office is probably just pure coincidence;
But,
If the shoe fits;
Wear it!
OK, technically most of these are frog ecards, but there are a couple of toads in there - http://www.krittercards.com/frog.htm. In any case, you can send that special toad lover a heartfelt greeting this holiday season.
I particulalry like this bloated, spread-eagle frog card.
Oh, and you can choose music to go along with any of these. Including the Godfather Theme!
Je ne parle pas francais, but I like this image of a "Dead Drunk Toad" found on this French Heavy Metal Webzine...
While this blog definitely will never be accused of being politically correct, polite, rated-g, fit for society, etc., we definitely appreciate good art when we see it (and if you click on it and buy it we make $$)...

Would you pay to see trained toads? - Short piece covering the 116th annual International Fair and Expo convention in Las Vegas... "[Jim Calhoun's] toads race each other, compete in long jumps, do high dives, jump through fiery hoops and, in the rare feat that doesn't rely primarily on jumping, cross three-rope bridges. The toads, though, are not very active this time of year."
Just read this sad story of a dog who died from eating a toad in Waco Texas. I never realized that some toads were so toxic until I started the squaretoad.com website. Sure, I figured that some toads are out there in rainforests that could be poisonous, but had no idea that cane toads were such a problem in Australia, or that there were any poisonous toads in north america...

Another find just in time for Christamas - Mistle Toad! A nice find from GoCollect.com...
Item # 8355This pretty frog is ready with her mistle-toe hanging strategically over her readied lips! Tip her to the side and see her eyes light up.
Rotten.com has a nice page about cane toads and their toxic bodies doubling as hallucinogenic lollipops ... and they posted this fantastic picture of Homer post-toad-licking...
Here is an Ode to a Toad that was submited on the SquareToad website back in October 2005 by Judith Cody:
HOW TO BUILD A
BETTER TOAD IMAGE
Quite slippery and
(What do you think?)
Rubbery!
Two were jiggling under the roses
In questionable
(Well look at that?)
Poses.
Three entered my doorway
To ask shocking
(Now what?)
Directions.
Four delivered packages of
(Could this be?)
Toadities!
Dozens of marvelous
(Duh!)
Toad particular, solid gold currencies!
Then the four toads told me,
All the gleaming gold money
Was barter for me if only I’d
Write them a flattering poem.
Which I did,
This is it
Which they loved
Gave me gold
Lovely gold
Lovely, lovely
Generous
Gorgeous
TOADS!

Here's a pretty funny game (assuming from Australia) that lets you drive a truck over cane toads and hear them splat. But, wait, there's more. After each round you trade in smashed cane toads for repairs to your truck if you hit rocks along the way.
You do need Adobe Shockwave installed on your computer to play.
Anyway, thought I'd share this toad game - more to come.

Pretty funny story from NPR about a dog who is addicted to sucking hallucinogenic toads. Who isn't though?
Some excerpts:
A dog may be man's best friend. But one dog, Lady, decided she needed more friends -- and she found plenty in the knot of toads living at the local pond. A suburban family's secret struggle with an uncommon addiction comes to light in this personal essay by NPR's Laura Mirsch.
"We noticed Lady spending an awful lot of time down by the pond in our backyard."
Lady would wander the area, disoriented and withdrawn, soporific and glassy-eyed.
"She finally staggered over to me from the cattails. She looked up at me, leaned her head over and opened her mouth like she was going to throw up, and out plopped this disgusting toad."
It turned out the toads were toxic -- and, if licked, the fluids on their skin provided a hallucinogenic effect.
"We couldn't keep our dog's addiction a secret any longer," Laura Mirsch says. "The neighbors all knew that Lady was a drug addict, and soon the other dogs weren't allowed to play with her."
"She seems to have outgrown the wild toad-obsessed years of her youth," Mirsch says, "and now only sucks on weekends."
Just read through the following disturbing article at http://www.news.com.au...
ALMOST 50,000 cane toads have been killed in a toad-busting exercise south of Darwin (Australia).
Dozens of Territorians have joined in the month-long battle, in the Timber Creek region, 400km south of Darwin, to stop the toads before they march into Western Australia...
"This initial exercise has been a huge success and we've had more than 50 people from all walks of life slug it out day and night helping wipe them out."
Anytime our fellow toads are massacred we are deeply saddened.
