ODE TO A HIGHWAY TOAD
The toad only knows how to crawl,
He pulls no other strokes at all;
Which makes it difficult for the toad,
When he has to cross the road.
Once a year toads return home
To mate and spawn by the load.
(if it wasn't for the road)
Or to be more exact,
The cars that compact.
If it takes the poor old toad.
Ten minutes to cross the road
It doesn't take a statistician
To work out, it's a suicide mission.
Nothing could rival
Toad's sense of survival,
Toady does what comes naturally:
He doesn't look right,
He doesn't look left,
And if it's all clear (or not),
He doesn't bother a jot,
He just crawls out into the road;
And sooner or later, splat!
That's that,
Toad's flat . . .
It's the Code
Of The Highway Toad!

HISTORY OF OLD GRINGO BOOTS & SHOES
Old Gringo was founded in 2000 by Yan Ferry and Ernie Tarut. They decided to combine Yan’s bootmaking and design skills with Ernie’s 30 years of experience in leather manufacturing to create boots of superior style and quality. This endeavor was named OLD GRINGO.
OLD GRINGO opened its first factory in the fall of 2000, and the first collection of original, vintage and retro styles was available within six months. The boots were well received in the market by traditional western outlets, as well as fashion boutiques, catalogs and shoe stores. The styles bridged the divide between western style and pure fashion.
After two years of ever-increasing demand, Old Gringo factory built a larger factory in Leon, GTO Mexico from which it continues to produce its collection of fashion-forward western wear.
Since 2000, Old Gringo has been focused on a single goal: creating western wear that combines the best materials with the skills of exceptional craftsmen. Beautiful designs and comfort are not accidents. It’s the result of applying a contemporary flair for fashion to a time-honored handcrafted art.
OLD GRINGO'S 110-STEP PRODUCTION & QUALITY PROCESS
One hundred-ten individual steps, performed by skilled craftsmen, are the foundation for the company's products. To meet the rigorous demands of its designs, Old Gringo produces and tans its own leathers in colors, textures and finishes developed by Yan Ferry. After carefully selecting the finest grade of leathers, the leathers undergo a meticulous tanning process. Each of the next steps, including cutting the upper materials, pre-fitting shafts and vamps, fancy stitch design, assembling the insoles, outsoles, last and uppers, the hand-driven lemon pegs and meticulous finishing, are considered critical in the construction of the perfect boot. Every step in the process requires craftsmanship.
Note:
In 2005, Ernie Tarut sold his interest in the factory to Yan Ferry to devote his complete attention to the success and development of the Old Gringo brand in the US and international markets. Yan and Ernie are still partners in the US wholesale operations with plans for future development of new products for their exclusive market.

Identifying frogs & toads correctly takes askill and years of slogging around in swamps. To help people identify and learn more about the frogs and toads calling from the woods, around ponds and wetlands and in their backyards, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has a new educational product, The Frogs and Toads of North Carolina Field Guide and Recorded Calls.
The 88-page field guide, with CD, which sells for $15, features audio calls & 120 full-color photographs that illustrate the 30 frog and toad species native to North Carolina. Detailed descriptions of each species simplify identification and range maps identify where they are found in the state.
Michael Dorcas, associate professor of biology at Davidson College and a herpetologist, co-wrote the book with Jeff Beane, collections manager with the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, Steven Price, a research coordinator with Davidson College Herpetology Lab, and Sarah Cross Owen, a former herpetologist with the Wildlife Resources Commission.
